THE CHALLENGE
The project was to create a magazine. Simple, right? Well, not quite – this was a big project on a short timeline. All aspects of the magazine needed to be considered, from the theme, to front cover design, to the articles and interviews. Photography, typography and information architecture were all a part of the challenge.

THE SOLUTION
Volume I of Cappello magazine was published as a 32-page artifact, complete with original and antique photography, first-hand and obtained articles, a letter from the editor, a timeline of hat styles in Hollywood, and a reference page for buying hats in Canada.

THE OUTCOME
I designed and printed a full-scale magazine with the theme of classic hats. Photography was directed to be dark and use of dark woods and shadows was the theme. Deep, rich colours were the colour palette, but with a slightly modern feel brought in with the hues being more vibrant than stuffy.

I established the theme of upscale hats was claimed for the magazine. I determined that the feel should be old-school, a bit dark and heavy on old culture and values. The name is the Italian word for hat.
I followed a lengthy list of architecture constrictions placed in the project mandate, which were strictly required by the client.

I completed the photography of hats was during a series of photo shoots set up in various lighting conditions and locations in people’s homes, to give the layouts an authentic feel. (For obtained interviews, the corresponding photography was used, to follow copyright instruction for student production.) Photos were provided by the respondent of the original interview conducted. To emphasize the nostalgia of this section, use of drop-shadows and muted grey tones was articulated.

I designed the magazine in InDesign, and converted it to the Blurb template afterwards. Print output of this as a bound physical magazine was the final goal.

I reinforced the luxury feel of the magazine with the use of old-school typography – classic Garamond font, and script font for section dividers.

WEARING TOO MANY HATS ?

I found that the biggest challenge in completing this project was juggling the myriad aspects of the project as a whole to conform to the tight schedule. Of particular concern was the timeline for printing and delivery.
